Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) in Lagos
Bone marrow (stem cell) transplant is a cure for certain forms of cancer and other blood disorders in children and teenagers, including sickle cell anaemia in some cases.
Stem cells are immature blood cells that can differentiate into red, white, or platelet cells. In most cases, stem cells are found in the bone marrow or blood.
A bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a procedure that replaces diseased or damaged cells with non-cancerous stem cells that can regenerate healthy new cells. BMT is typically used after cancer therapies have killed the bone marrow’s natural stem cells. BMT may be used to replace stem cells. When the chances of cure with chemotherapy alone are slim, a BMT is used.
