Splenectomy in Lagos
A splenectomy is surgery that removes the entire spleen, a delicate organ that sits beneath the left rib cage near the stomach and is the size of a fist. The spleen plays a crucial role in the body’s defence (immune) system. When you’re sick, it contains special white blood cells that destroy bacteria and aid the body in fighting infections. It also aids in the removal of old red blood cells from the body’s circulation, or filtering.
A partial splenectomy is performed when only a portion of the spleen is removed.
