Dr. Mbatia’s journey to becoming a paediatric haemato-oncology expert began at the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine, where she received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. After finishing her undergraduate studies at the same institution, she continued her education by earning a Master of Medicine degree in Paediatrics and Child Health. Later, she received further training in the collaborative Paediatric Oncology Programme at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, affiliated with Harvard Medical School in the USA, and the Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 in Cairo.
Contributions to the Field
Significant strides have been made by Dr. Mbatia in the field of paediatric haemato-oncology, particularly in Kenya. Dr. Mbatia devoted a two-year period of her life to volunteering at Kenyatta National Hospital, providing assistance to academic and clinical services in paediatric haemato-oncology. Moreover, she has conducted research on child health and paediatric HIV for numerous USAID and WHO-funded projects at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Nairobi, and the Network of AIDS Researchers of East and Southern Africa.
Apart from her work in haemato-oncology, Dr. Mbatia is also interested in medical education and enhancing paediatric oncology care in resource-limited settings. She remains an active member of the Kenya Paediatric Association and the American Society of Paediatric Hemato-oncology, where she shares her expertise and contributes to research.
