St. Paul’s Hospital Addis Ababa

St. Paul’s Hospital was built in 1969 (was named St Paul General Specialized Hospital until 2008) by Emperor Haile Selassie in collaboration with the German Evangelical Church, as a source of medical care for underserved populations. It currently has 392 beds, with an annual average of 200,000 patients and a catchment population of more than 5 million. Approximately 75% of the patients receive medical services free of charge. There are over 1300 clinical and non-clinical staff in over 13 departments, most recently launching its new hemodialysis unit.

St. Paul’s  Hospital History

The Medical School opened in 2007, the new Millennium era of the Ethiopian calendar, which is 7 years behind the Gregorian calendar. It is intended to alleviate the severe shortage of medical doctors in the country. In line with various encouraging efforts performed by the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health in this regard, it is clear that the newly opened school, with a practical modular and integrated curriculum, will be providing much-needed medical professionals to the people of Ethiopia.

The school was established by the ministry with the initiative of Tedros Adhanom (the then-minister) together with Gordon Williams of the department of urology at the Hammersmith Hospital in London as its first dean.

With the new maternity hospital, children’s hospital and college complexes under construction, the college is intended to become a model integrated curriculum with undergraduate and graduate health sciences programs. The school has already created strong ties to local and international institutions, like Addis Ababa University, Jimma University, Tulane University, University of Michigan as well as the Open University.

Tulane University’s collaboration with St. Paul’s is spearheaded by Wuleta Lemma, its Country Director, and is mainly focused on undergraduate medical education, concentrating on library resources, ICT support for infrastructure and technical support, and financing staff development programs and now expanding to postgraduate programs like specialty in Pediatrics.

The initial goal of the partnership between University of Michigan and St. Paul’s, spearheaded by [Senait Fisseha], was to improve maternal child health and decrease maternal mortality. Their efforts have led to the obstetrics and gynecology residency program and the addition of comprehensive family planning to the medical school curriculum. The partnership has since been expanded, and plans for new training programs in multiple fields and departments are in the works.

Other partnerships include the Egyptian Ministry of Health, which is helping to develop a Gastrointestinal/Hepatology Unit and Renal Center, and well as the Harvard School of Public Health, University of Bergen and University of Alberta.

I am forever grateful to St. Paul’s Hospital as a symbol of hope when I went through cardiac surgery. Moreover, they not only provided high-quality medical care, but they also showed empathy and provided emotional comfort as I struggled through the diagnosis journey.

I felt secure during the distressing time through the staff’s genuine love and concern. This holistic treatment, that combines counseling and alternative therapies with medical treatment, gave me the power to partake in my own health. I am indebted to St. Paul’s forever for having provided me with a solid basis upon which I can build towards my lifelong pursuit of well-being and happiness.

Budget friendly and High quality Urological Services at Saint Paul’s Hospital

Rated 5.0 out of 5
April 8, 2024

In the quest for affordable healthcare, St. Paul’s Hospital shines brightly as a beacon of quality and affordability, especially in urology services. Even with my initial fears, I got extremely professional service and fair pay. On a restricted budget, the quality of service never disappointed me. The staff of St. Paul’s Hospital, which was tireless in availing and facilitating affordable healthcare through fair pricing and schemes of assistance, stood as a shield so that my treatment never got compromised.

Insurance assistance and alternative payment methods offered by them reduced any financial qualms, so I could worry only about my recovery path. I am thankful to St. Paul’s Hospital as through its financial support, my way towards recovery was less complicated and stressful.
