Balloon Atrial Septostomy Surgery in Lagos
The balloon atrial septostomy technique is used to widen an atrial septal defect and increase blood oxygenation. It’s commonly done on kids who have transposition of the great arteries.
Using a large vein in the leg, a balloon catheter is inserted into the heart, creating a cavity between the upper two chambers of the heart, allowing a sufficient amount of oxygen to enter the body. This lowers the baby’s blueness and encourages him or her to live after a final open-heart operation.
