Black Lion Hospital Addis Ababa
Black Lion Hospital Addis Ababa, also known as Tikur Anbessa Hospital, is the largest teaching hospital for the University of Addis Medical School in Ethiopia. The hospital has been providing services to the community for over five decades. It now treats over 500 thousand outpatients and more than 21 thousand inpatients. It serves as a referral hospital for the more difficult cases seen in other hospitals, ranging from emergency obstetrics, paediatrics, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS to advanced cancers.
Despite its importance in the Ethiopian healthcare system, Black Lion Hospital faces several challenges, including infrastructure issues and limited resources. However, efforts are being made to improve its facilities and services, including partnerships with organizations for healthcare quality improvement. The hospital is also developing healthcare quality improvement efforts in collaboration with colleagues from the United States.
It has provided healthcare services to the entire community for over 50 years and is a renowned referral hospital with strong connections to governmental and private health sectors. The hospital’s services are essential for the people of Ethiopia, as it is often the only option for specialized care in the country. Despite its challenges, the hospital continues to play a crucial role in the country’s healthcare system and contributes to improving healthcare services in Ethiopia.
