Education and Training
Dr. Andrew J. Duncan started his medical journey by pursuing his Bachelor of Science degree in Pathology, which he obtained with first-class Honors from the University of Edinburgh in 1980. He then went on to complete his MB ChB in 1983 and further pursued his surgical training. In 1987, he obtained his FRCS (Surg.) from Edinburgh, which was followed by his cardiothoracic surgical training at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh City Hospital as a Registrar and Senior Registrar (1988 – 1997). Dr. Duncan later obtained a Cardiothoracic FRCS in 1995 and Specialist Recognition in the UK.
Work Experience
Dr. Duncan has worked as the Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Lancashire Cardiac Centre, Royal Victoria Hospital, Blackpool, UK as a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon before joining Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi. Throughout his career, he has performed a large number of simple and complex CABG and Valvular Surgeries. He is also an expert in off-pump CABG surgery and has performed more than 1500 cases in the last 20 years. Dr. Duncan’s specialized interest in aortic valve and thoracic aortic surgery has led him to perform numerous open arch anastomosis procedures for patients with acute dissections with excellent results.
Treatments and Success Rates
Dr. Duncan’s focus on providing high-quality care to his patients is reflected in his success rate. He has a particular interest in high-risk re-operative cardiac surgery and has performed many successful operations. His vast experience has also enabled him to maintain broad general thoracic surgical interests. Dr. Duncan performs endobronchial debulking and tracheo-bronchial stenting, and his procedures are predominantly VATS, with more than 90% being minimally invasive. He has recently introduced Nd-YAG laser lung resection, which is also done by the VATS approach. Dr. Duncan’s experience in the field of cardiothoracic surgery has also led him to develop a regional collaborative network with Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology, leading to hybrid procedures with either arch replacement or debranching and subsequent TEVAR.
Technology
Dr. Duncan’s expertise in cardiothoracic surgery is not only due to his vast experience and training but also his use of advanced technology. He uses antegrade cerebral perfusion and mild hypothermia at 30oC for his root/ascending/hemi-arch procedures. Dr. Duncan has performed more than 200 such operations with open arch anastomosis, including acute dissections, with excellent results. He also performs two-stage total arch replacement and second-stage thoraco-abdominal repair for suitable patients.
