Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is a not-for-profit Children’s Hospital established in 1947. Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is the most established paediatric hospital in Eastern and Central Africa, providing healthcare to children in Kenya as well as those referred from neighbouring countries. The hospital attends to over 300,000 outpatients annually through a network of 15 facilities in and around Nairobi and admits over 9,000 patients annually at its 100-bed facility located at Muthaiga, Nairobi.

Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is licensed to provide healthcare to children and teens up to 21 years, and provides the full range of healthcare services including preventive care, accident and emergency, outpatient care, inpatient medical and surgical care, and rehabilitation services. The hospital provides specialist care covering more than 20 aspects of paediatric specialisation, and also runs a teens’ clinic providing comprehensive healthcare to teenagers and young adults. Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is licensed and recognised as a Level 5 Healthcare Facility, a Tertiary Referral and Teaching Children’s Hospital. The hospital operates on a self-sustaining financing model through charging fee for services.

With a staff complement of 750, the hospital employs 90 doctors and 250 nurses directly and works with more than 200 independent specialist consultants to provide high quality healthcare services. The hospital allocates substantial resources towards staff training and development with greater emphasis on specialised training. The hospital has a fully accredited Ethical Review Board that oversees research activities which range from operations research to clinical trials. The Gertrude’s Institute of Child Health and Research which coordinates all training activities provides specialised training for nurses as well as accredited short courses in resuscitation, among others.

Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital has put in place a very robust quality and safety programme that ensures continuous improvement in line with internationally acceptable benchmarks. As a member of the Children’s Hospitals Association, USA, Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital benchmarks its care processes and outcomes with the best children’s hospitals in the world. Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is the first paediatric hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa to be accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), USA. The JCI accreditation is the gold standard for best practice in healthcare quality, safety and management.

The hospital, through the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, works with different partners to provide much needed care to children from less privileged families especially in informal settlements. The hospital also works with local and international partners to establish highly specialised services, provide specialised training, and improve the quality of paediatric care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Joint Commission International, USAThe hospital has earned the Joint Commission International’s Gold Seal of Approval for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its internationally recognised healthcare quality standards. The Gold Seal of Approval is a symbol of quality that reflects an organisation’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care and compliance with hospital standards related to a variety of areas, including the International Patient Safety Goals, patients assessment and care, anaesthesia and surgical care, medication management, patient and family education, quality improvement, infection prevention and control, governance and leadership, facility management staff qualifications and education, and information management. Staff from across the organisation continue to work together to develop and implement strategies that improve care for patients.

Safe Care, NetherlandsFollowing an audit of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital facilities, the hospital now accredited by Safecare with each of the facilities achieving the highest level of quality categorisation i.e. Safecare Level Five. Safecare aims to improve the quality and safety of healthcare services using incremental standards-based recognition and by building institution that can objectively measure and levels of quality and patient safety.

UN Global CompactGertrude’s Children’s Hospital has renewed its commitment to the UN Global Compact and supports its implementation and principles. The hospital is committed to continuous performance improvement and aligning its operations and strategies with the Global Compact’s universally accepted principles in human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. By being leaders in health issues related to children, Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is also at the centre of the Compact’s objective of catalysing action in support of broader UN goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Children’s Hospital Association (CHA)Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital joined the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA)- the voice for more than 220 children’s hospitals. As champions for children’s health, CHA advances public policy enabling hospitals to better serve children and builds awareness of child health issues. It is the premier resource for paediatric data and analytics driving improved clinical and operational performance among its member hospitals.

Ethical Leadership and Business Mark of Ethics AwardGertrude’s Children’s Hospital was the top recipient of 2015 ELNET Mark of Ethics, an award for Ethical Leadership and Business Awards. ELNET seeks to engage leaders of integrity in solving societal problems. This network targets leaders because every organisation or nation is as good as the quality of its leaders. The hospital refuses to elicit, accept or pay bribes, gives back to the society and obeys the government and other authorities.

Safe Kids Worldwide MemberSafe Kids Worldwide is a global organisation dedicated to preventing injuries in children. Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide and has been working with Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Kenyan task force including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to advocate for the Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2014 seeking to introduce child road safety into Kenya’s Traffic Act.

FiRe AwardGertrude’s was delighted to find itself first runner-up in the FiRe (Financial Reporting) Awards in 2008. This distinction was awarded for excellence in financial reporting and corporate citizenship contained in a company’s annual report and accounts.

Gertrude’s, because of the monies it receives from so many donors, believes in the absolute necessity of transparency between itself and the partners with whom the hospital works.

In order to achieve this, it is of prime importance to provide full and accurate documentation which will explain at a glance how the hospital is run, who governs it, and what is its financial status, since it is only natural that donors wish to know not only where funds are most needed, but almost more important, how endowments are spent.

Without playing an accountable and responsible role in its financial records, Gertrude’s would be unable to justify any future requests for funding.

Resuscitation Council (UK)The Gertrude’s institute of Child Health and Research is accredited by the Resuscitation Council (UK) to offer resuscitation training in Paediatric Life Support. The courses offered include: European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) and Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS).

ISO 22000:2005 certifiedGertrude’s Children’s Hospital has consistently provided services that aim to meet its client’s expectations, while observing industry and legal standards. This is in keeping with our slogan “Quality Healthcare For Children”. The Hospital’s kitchen and food production process is ISO 22000:2005 certified.

A Certified Blue CompanyGertrude’s Children’s Hospital is a certified Blue Company. The Blue Company certification is an initiative of volunteer corporations and institutions who have the public interest at heart with the objective of encouraging companies to fight corruption in all its forms. The Blue Company initiative is backed by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) to which Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital is a signatory.
