St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College Reviews and Costs
Ethiopia’s health system emphasizes assuring the healthcare needs of its large, mostly rural population. As the largest and most populous country in the Horn of Africa, it adopted modern medicine quite early. Although the first hospital here was built in 1897, it was with the establishment of St. Paulos Hospital, also called Paulos Hospital and St Paul’s Hospital in Addis Ababa, that new benchmarks for healthcare were set.
The complete name of the hospital is Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC). It is governed by the Federal Ministry of Health and is renowned for developing the first integrated modular and hybrid problem-based curriculum for medical aspirants.
St Paul Millennium Medical College rapidly grew into the foremost medical institution for the vast majority of Ethiopians and for budding doctors to acquire the best medical education. Today, St Paul Hospital is the largest public hospital in Ethiopia and Addis Ababa, with departments dedicated to different medical specialties. The hospital provides robust academic, research, and medical services. This listing will give you every single detail about it.
St Paul Hospital History
St. Paul’s Hospital was first established in July 1947. The purpose behind it was to provide care to those who couldn’t afford medical expenses. At that time, it had 250 beds. The location of the hospital was Atobis Tera, the modern regional bus terminal. It was administered by the Ministry of Health in Ethiopia.
In 1969, SPMMC was relocated to the Gulele district in Addis Ababa. Here, the construction of its building was financed by the late Emperor Haile Selassie in collaboration with the German Evangelical Church. The goal of setting up St Paul’s Hospital was to provide medical assistance to poor people who could not afford treatment. The medical school, or St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, was established in 2014 to overcome the disturbing shortage of healthcare professionals in Ethiopia.
Initially, the hospital was administered by the Ministry of Health, but it was later transferred to the Haile Selassie I Foundation. The foundation appointed several high-profile people to the St. Paul Hospital Board of Directors.
Seventy-five percent of the building’s construction cost was covered by the German Evangelical Church, while the rest was covered by welfare organizations, including the National Lottery Administration, which gave nearly one million birrs. In addition to over 6,000,000 birrs, the emperor himself had given 33,000 sqm of land to the Hailselasie I Foundation. In addition, he also gave me a large sum of money he received as a birthday gift. During the Ethiopian Millennium celebrations in 2007, St. Paul’s opened a medical college after serving the nation exclusively as a hospital for 60 years.
